Broadcom's Family of Advanced High-Definition Video Compression Chips First to Support Dolby Digital Plus and Coding Technologies' aacPlus(TM) Audio Codecs in the Broadcast Market
Advanced Audio Codecs Deliver High-Quality Audio Using Significantly Less Bandwidth
LAS VEGAS, NAB 2006, April 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that its family of AVC/MPEG-2/VC-1 high-definition (HD) digital video decoder chips for satellite, cable and IP set-top boxes and media gateways now supports Dolby(R) Digital Plus and Coding Technologies' MPEG-4 aacPlus(TM) specifications. These advanced standards-based audio codec technologies significantly reduce the bit rate requirements for delivering audio in high-definition DVD and broadcasting, digital video and radio, and Internet music applications. The improved bandwidth efficiency resulting from supporting Dolby Digital Plus and aacPlus standards will enable operators to deliver higher quality audio and offer more audio channels and services.
Broadcom's HD digital video decoder chips that support these new codecs include the Broadcom(R) BCM7400, BCM7401, BCM7402 and BCM7411, which are currently shipping to leading cable, satellite and IP set-top box manufacturers. Implemented in software on powerful audio DSP engines, Dolby Digital Plus and aacPlus can be downloaded onto decoder chips, enabling existing customers and service operators to upgrade their set-top boxes and immediately take advantage of the improved bandwidth efficiency resulting from these powerful audio codecs. All future shipments and new generations of Broadcom's HD digital video decoders will support these audio codecs on-chip.
"Operators are very eager to field upgrade their set-top boxes based on Broadcom silicon with these powerful audio codec engines," said Brian Sprague, Vice President of Marketing, STB, DTV, Broadband Communication Group. "The improved bandwidth efficiency resulting from Dolby Digital Plus and aacPlus codecs will enable them to deliver DVD-quality audio services to subscribers, support more audio channels and free up network bandwidth for additional revenue generating services."
Dolby Digital Plus and aacPlus are audio coding standards that reduce the bit rate requirements for delivering high-quality audio streams to subscribers. Dolby Digital Plus is an enhanced coding system based on the Dolby Digital codec and offers increased bit rate efficiency, reduces compression artifacts and is backward-compatible with existing Dolby Digital deployments. Dolby Digital Plus is being transcoded to Dolby Digital for backward-compatible S/PDIF connectivity with existing A/V receivers.
"Broadcom shares our passion for innovation," said Page Haun, Broadcast Director, Consumer Division, Dolby Laboratories. "Because its cutting-edge digital video decoder chips are built on Dolby Digital Plus, they are designed to meet the broadcast demands of the future while remaining fully compatible with today's A/V receivers."
MPEG-4 aacPlus is the enhanced coding system based on MPEG-4 AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) in combination with Coding Technologies' powerful Spectral Band Replication (SBR) significantly increasing codec efficiency. aacPlus delivers streaming and downloadable 5.1-channel audio at 128 Kbps, near CD-quality stereo at 32 Kbps, excellent quality stereo at 24 Kbps, and good quality for mixed content even for mono below 16 Kbps. aacPlus is also being transcoded to the high-quality DTS format for backward-compatible S/PDIF connectivity to existing A/V receivers.
"We are pleased to have Broadcom, who is a leader in the HDTV and digital video market, supporting our aacPlus codec technology," said Stefan Meltzer, Vice President Business Development, Coding Technologies. "Broadcom's decision to integrate aacPlus in its family of HD video decoder chips will significantly enhance the audio quality of today's set-top boxes."
